You are ready to try martial arts, but which school is right for you and your family? There are many factors to finding a great school some of which include location, style, and instructors.
Start by searching for schools located in your area. Typical class attendance is 3 to 5 times per week, so a school near your work or home is convenient. For the dedicated student, some will travel farther to practice a particular style or train with a special instructor.
There are many styles of martial arts. Look for a style to accomplish your martial arts goals. Reasons to train in martial arts include self-defense, fitness, discipline, and confidence. Self-defense can have a wide range of meanings from “soft” styles – circular motion, fluidity – to “hard” styles – hard striking techniques. Fitness can range from classes dominated with cardio moves to throws and grappling. Discipline and confidence come from regular practice of techniques and instruction.
Look for an instructor with the heart of a teacher. This person will take time to answer your questions and have a humble attitude. A great instructor invests his or her energy into each student improving the students’ technique and attitude.
